Squats and the exercise equation

Do you know how much you can squat for 6 reps? I do. I can Squat 335lbs. Do I know this to impress my friends? Hell no, I know this because squats can help predict your strength on other exercises. Squats are a measure of quadriceps strength, which helps determine your 6-rep max on the deadlift, stepup, and lunge, says William Ebben, Ph. D., of Marquette University.

Use the equations below to estimate your lower-body strength.

Deadlift
(lb you squat x 0.83) + 32.8lb
Mine: (335 x 0.83) + 32.8 = 310.9lbs

Barbell Stepup
(lb you squat x 0.50) + 7.3lb
Mine: (335 x 0.50) + 7.3 = 174.8lbs

Barbell Lunge
(lb you squat x 0.52) + 32.6lb
Mine (335 x 0.52) + 206.8lbs

There you have it. What are your calculations and how close are you to these results in the gym?

Powerfoods: Nori

Nori Seaweed
Best known as the dark outer wrapping on sushi rolls, this sea algae is particularly high in fiber, calcium, iron, and zinc. “It’s also rich in lignans, which recent studies have shown to help prevent tumor growth,” says Susan Kleiner, PhD, author of The Good Mood Diet. Look for it in the international section of your local supermarket or online at edenfoods.com.

Serving tip:
Grind a sheet of nori in a coffee grinder and use the powder as a salt substitute to season food.
